February Book Club: The Elegance of the Hedgehog

I really have wanted to get back into reading. I used to be a voracious reader and could finish 500-600 page books in a day or two. I spend so much time looking at screens with my job, that I really wanted to find a way to step away from my laptop and phone and completely disconnect. But I need someone or something to literally force me to stop with my endless (and mindless) scrolling. So I came up with the idea of starting a long distance book club with my besties Ann and Georgiana! We've been seriously sucking at skyping and calling each other over the past few months, so this would be a way to force us to all sit down either once or twice a month and simply catch up virtually over drinks from thousands of miles away. We live in three different time zones and life just gets in the way, so a book club seemed like something fun we could all do together while still being apart. I also thought I'd bring the book club to the blog where you all can join in on the conversation and we can chit chat with each other about the book or really anything else!

This month it was my turn to pick, so I settled on The Elegance of the Hedgehog (the french title: L'Élégance du hérisson) by French novelist Muriel Barbery. The book follows events in the life of a concierge, Renée Michel, whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl named Paloma Josse. Paloma is the daughter of an upper-class family living in the upscale Parisian apartment building where Renée works. This book has been sitting on my bookshelf since high school, so I am finally excited to pick it up and dig in! Can't wait to hear what your thoughts are and if you liked it or not!
